This box set contains the first four books of the Gus Mackie novella series. Gus Mackie is not your typical Hollywood-esque private investigator - he is rough around the edges, imperfect, and his cases are few and far between. However, he manages to get by, thanks to free rent from living in his office. Gus's closest friend is a Native-American police detective, who serves as his conscience and protects him from getting into trouble.
In "Gus Mackie and the Hot Tamale," Gus is hired by a married man to investigate whether his secretary is cheating on him. Complicating matters, the man's wife hires Gus to find her stolen half-million-dollar necklace and link her husband to the crime.
In "Gus Mackie and the Missing Princess," Gus's police detective friend, Bernie Longmire, approaches him with a delicate case. A country's king and queen are set to return home for an important celebration, but their daughter has gone missing. Bernie needs to find the princess before the royal couple's arrival, as the king's rule may be in jeopardy if they don't have their daughter with them. Has the girl been kidnapped by a power-hungry duke, or has she simply run away from the pressures of royal life?
It's time for Gus to move to a better office in Detroit, and his daughter Angela and Bernie help him with the relocation in "Gus Mackie and Weeping Wife." Upon returning to the old office, they encounter a distraught woman who doesn't know where her husband is - did he run off with another woman, or is he dead in a shallow grave? Gus takes the case, and he and Bernie investigate the possibilities, including a potential murder.
In "Gus Mackie and the Lost Heiress," Gus is relaxing in his new office when he sees a young woman outside, reading the sign about his private investigator services. She is homeless and wants Gus to help her find the mother who gave her up for adoption when she was a child. Gus takes the case and offers the woman a place to stay, with Angela taking her under her wing and giving her a makeover. Gus and Bernie then set out to track down the woman's family.
Throughout these four stories, Gus Mackie emerges as an imperfect but dedicated private investigator, relying on his police detective friend Bernie and his daughter Angela to help him navigate his cases. The narratives explore themes of marriage, royalty, missing persons, and the search for family, all with Gus Mackie's unique brand of grit and determination.
